5 Reasons to whistle train your dog

There are loads of reasons why you should consider whistle training your dog. 

Whether you’re a gundog handler or you’re training your family pet, developing clear and consistent communication between you and your dog is a vital foundation for your training.

Dog whistles are designed to do exactly that! There are stacks of reasons why you should whistle train your dog, and a whole load of articles and research carried out by world champion trainers too.

Remember - whistles aren’t just for gundogs! A whistle can be a fantastic training and communication tool for all kinds of dogs.

1: Cut through the noise

Whistles can be heard by your dog over long distances and over all kinds of terrain, including through wind and water! We don’t want to be ‘that guy’ standing bellowing our dog’s name endlessly only to be happily blanked by a dog who is already too far away. A whistle command is clear and sharp and will be very clear to your dog, and save your voice!

2: Consistent commands

When training your dog to a whistle, you’ll establish whistle patterns or sounds for each individual command. Once you know these patterns, train them and practice them, they can be used by anyone with the whistle. This saves the dog getting confused when different people ask them for behaviours in different ways.

3: They’re not just for recall!

You can use a whistle to train all kinds of behaviours. For example, most gundog trainers will have a whistle pattern for recall, stop, change direction, hunt and back. Sometimes even more. Pet dog owners can make great use of recall and stop whistles - especially if your dog is often allowed to run off-leash. A stop whistle is a great thing to learn.

4: More consistent results:

Dogs are pretty smart cookies - even if they do a great job of hiding it at times! They are incredibly in tune with our emotions as owners and handler and they know right away if you’re frustrated or angry. It carries in your voice whether you like it or not. A dog is a whole lot less inclined to pay attention if you’re losing your patience with them.

A whistle removes your emotion from the command - resulting in the dog being a lot more likely to pay attention every time. Your whistle sound will always be the same, no matter if you’re having a great walk and the dog is doing everything right, or you’re about to put them up for adoption.

5: Building trust:

With all this in mind, it’s important to remember that all of these things help us to build a strong bond of trust with our dog. If our commands are clear and consistent and they can hear them every time, they’re going to feel a lot more confident in their interactions with us.
